New Report Released on Region’s Coastal Water Quality The Maine Coastal Observing Alliance (MCOA) announced the release of its new report on the region’s coastal water quality. MCOA was formed in December 2014 to coordinate a regional effort to monitor coastal waters, particularly estuaries, and detect trends such as those related to ocean acidification and nutrient loading. Estuaries are the semi-enclosed areas where fresh water from streams and rivers mixes with salt water from the ocean.   The Damariscotta River Association’s newest trail has become “official” in that it has acquired a sign and a small parking area. The 15 acre preserve, on Rutherford Island, is located between Atlantic and Roderick Roads with the trailhead off of West Side Road. It was acquired several years ago through a DRA fundraising effort. Last year the organization’s volunteer “Trail Tamers” built a trail within the preserve, creating the only public-access trail on the island. This year, 14 bog bridges were constructed and laid in trail areas that tended to become muddy following wet weather. The trail passes near …

A “Young Composers Showcase” concert was held on August 7 at at DRA’s Round Top Farm Darrows Barn. This was the fourth year that DRA and Salt Bay Chamberfest collaborated on the Music & Nature Camp at the DRA. Together, the educators of the Music & Nature Camp help the children to express the connections between nature and music. The camp concluded with this performance of nine new works of nature-inspired music composed by the children and played by Salt Bay Chamberfest musicians. Please check it out on our video page!
