Black-eyed Susans: A flower for the season

When planning a garden, choosing native plants is one of the most impactful decisions you can make. They anchor the local ecosystem, support struggling pollinator populations, and adapt beautifully to local climates. Yet, some gardeners hesitate to plant native species because they worry it will take years to see results.

Enter the Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta). Unlike many native plants, Black-eyed Susans will often bloom the first year they are planted, providing almost instant gratification. For this reason, and many more, I often recommend them to anyone wanting to introduce native plants to their home garden or field.

Growth habits and ideal conditions

Black-eyed Susans thrive in sunny to mostly sunny locations, tend to be somewhat drought tolerant, and are famously easy to grow in a wide variety of soil types and conditions. They also boast an exceptionally long bloom time, often lasting a month or more. While they look stunning when planted in large clumps or drifts, their botanical nature requires a little understanding.

The Black-eyed Susan is what’s called a short-lived perennial, meaning that each individual plant only lives for a few years – usually one to three. However, they bloom reliably each of those years, offering great wildlife value and a beautiful addition to a landscape. If you allow them to reseed naturally, you can enjoy them every summer.

A closer look: anatomy and varieties

To the casual observer, a Black-eyed Susan looks like a single blossom, but it belongs to the Asteraceae family – the same family as purple coneflowers, sunflowers, and asters. What we think of as an individual flower is actually a composite of many smaller, specialized flowers. The bright yellow “petals” are sterile ray flowers whose sole purpose is to attract pollinators. Meanwhile, the dark brown, flattened, cone-like center is made up of dozens of individual “disc flowers” packed with nectar and pollen. The disc flowers closest to the outer yellow petals bloom first, while the ones in the very center bloom last.

Supporting this unique flower head are simple, unlobed leaves arranged in an alternate pattern along the stem. Both the leaves and stems are rough with stiff, bristly “hairs”. In fact, the “hirta” part of its scientific name is derived from the Latin word for hairy.

The native range of the Black-eyed Susan covers most of the eastern half of the U.S., with some native populations scattered slightly further west. In the eastern U.S. alone, there are around half a dozen different Rudbeckia species. Some of these look so similar that they are also casually called Black-eyed Susans, which can make common names confusing. Just because two plants look alike doesn’t mean they share the same growth characteristics or will do well in the same locations.

A lifeline for wildlife

That rough, hairy texture on the foliage serves a brilliant evolutionary purpose: deer tend to mostly leave it alone (notice that I said “tend to” and “mostly”). While deer bypass them, other wildlife thrives because of them.

The flowers are a magnet for a wide variety of pollinators. Butterflies of all kinds – especially some of the smaller species – can be found drinking nectar from the ray and disc flowers. A wide variety of native bees will also visit for nectar and pollen, with a few native bee species being pollen specialists uniquely dependent on Rudbeckias or closely related genera. Several species of flower flies are also consistent visitors.

Even when the blooms fade, the plant’s contribution to the ecosystem continues. The rough leaves are a preferred food source for silvery checkerspot caterpillars, and after the flowers go to seed, goldfinches and other seed-eating birds will gladly devour the seeds.
