Carve a wooden spoon

February 26 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

$70 – $85

an arrangement of hand carved wooden spoons of different sizes

Try your hand at a new skill

Wood carving is a great way to not only learn a new skill, but also become more knowledgeable about types of wood and its attributes. Join instructor Jes Steele of Wood Thrush Wilderness LLC for the afternoon to meet new people and take home a new life skill!

Spoon carving is a wonderful craft that allows you to create functional and beautiful wooden spoons using traditional hand tools. The spoons we make will be the size of a teaspoon/tablespoon with a handle of about 4”.  The instructor will cover the process of gathering the proper tools and materials, caring for and sharpening your tools, using knives and techniques, refining your cut, selecting wood and preparing it, making the “bowl,” shaping the handle and creating designs, and sanding and treating the spoon.

Note that carving can be physically challenging for your hands and wrist, and this class may not be suitable for those with limitations in hand strength or mobility. The course fee covers tools, material, instruction, and a spoon or two to take home! Additional tools and kits will be available for purchase through the instructor.

Please bring water, snacks, and anything else you need to be comfortable for a few hours in the classroom.
