Volunteer training: Horseshoe crab monitoring

April 23, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free
horseshoe crab count

Take part in an long-term study of horseshoe crab populations

Anyone interested in horseshoe crabs, the health of the Damariscotta River Estuary, or citizen science is invited to take part in an study of horseshoe crab populations in the estuary. The count has been ongoing for nearly 15 years, enabling us to document population changes over time.

The training will begin at Coastal Rivers’ Great Salt Bay Farm on Belvedere Road with an overview of the program and an introduction to the life and habits of these fascinating creatures. The group will then travel to Damariscotta Mills for hands-on practice with procedure and documentation. Bring your boots!

The horseshoe crab count takes place daily from early May to mid June at the diurnal high tide. The count is done by rotating teams, so this is not a daily commitment for volunteers. Children under 15 should be accompanied by an adult. Note that some of the observation sites are steep and/or rocky, with uncertain footing.

Health & Safety

Participants who are eligible must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. You’ll be asked to confirm your vaccination status during registration.
