Horseshoe Crab Volunteer Training
April 30, 2016 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am
Free
Anyone interested in helping with DRA’s annual horseshoe crab count is invited to attend this free two-hour training on April 30. The count, part of an ongoing study that’s been in place for over 10 years, enables us to document population changes over time.
The training will begin at DRA Great Salt Bay Farm with an overview of the program and an introduction to the life and habits of these fascinating creatures. The group will then travel to Damariscotta Mills for hands-on practice with procedure and documentation. Bring your boots!
The horseshoe crab count takes place daily between May 1 and June 15 at the diurnal high tide. The count is done by rotating teams, so this is not a daily commitment for volunteers. Children under 15 should be accompanied by an adult. Note that some of the observation sites are steep and/or rocky, with uncertain footing.
Please call DRA to register.
