Beginning Map and Compass Navigation, or “Staying Found”
April 28, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
$20 – $25
Everyone venturing into the woods should learn to navigate confidently with a map and compass. In this workshop, participants will learn how to read a USCGS topographical map, how to use a handheld compass, how to obtain a bearing from the map and convert it to magnetic from true, and what declination is. Practice finding your way with a map and compass and discuss skills that will help you “stay found” (as opposed to getting lost).
This hands-on, skills-based course will include many outdoor field exercises. All necessary navigation aids (map and compass) are provided. Bring a lunch, and be prepared to be outside for about an hour at a time. Instructed by Seth Walton of Maine Sport Outfitters and DRA Education Director Sarah Gladu. Both are Registered Maine Guides.
Registration is required, as space is limited. Kids age 9 or older are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Fee: $25/$20 members.
