PARTNER EVENT: Training for Observation and Research in Coastal Habitats (TORCH) Data Workshop

April 27 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

$25

two volunteers collecting water quality data

We have data. What does it mean?

Join us for a “hands on” data workshop using readily available freeware and Excel. Bring your own data or use ours.

Morning session: Presentations covering a range of topics, see list below.

Afternoon session: After a break for lunch, we will work with real data, either your own or those collected from the Damariscotta Estuary during a “hands-on” experience with the applications and techniques. Attendees will need to bring their own laptop, preferably with applications pre-installed. We will send out a list of applications that we will be using for the workshop in March.

If there is something you would like us to cover but don’t see in the list of topics, please email Kathleen Thornton or call 207-563-8124. Although we can’t make any guarantees, we will do our best to accommodate your requests.

Partial List of Topics:

  • Data quality control: Streamlining your QC
  • Working with datasets in Excel: Some tricks and tips
  • Statistics: Basic statistical methods for evaluating data
  • Working with mapping programs
  • Making graphs: Common graphs and what we can learn from them
  • How you can can find and use data available on the web to compliment and support your research and monitoring programs
  • Time series verses simultaneous sampling: what we can learn from each

The presentations will be centered around coastal and estuarine water quality monitoring, but the concepts presented would be useful in other applications.

Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Register using the form below. The cost to register is $25. DRA-PWA is offering a full scholarship to those for whom cost is a barrier to participation. Click on the link on the summary page of the registration form below to enter a discount code, and use the code “SCHL”.

Hosted by Damariscotta River Association/Pemaquid Watershed Association, National Science Foundation, Sea Grant Maine, University of Maine Darling Marine Center, and Maine EPSCoR.
