Whaleback Oyster Middens Guided Walk
June 16, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
FreeWhaleback Shell Midden is a shell midden, or dump, located on the east bank of the Damariscotta River in Damariscotta, across from the Glidden shell midden. Composed mainly of oyster shells, the middens were formed over a period of about 1,000 years between 200 BC to AD 1000.
Though significant in size, only a small portion of the original midden remains today as much of it was made into chicken feed in the late 1800’s. As a result, the Glidden midden, visible directly across the river, is now the largest in Maine and also the largest on the U.S. east coast north of Georgia.
Join DRA Education Director Sarah Gladu for a guided tour of this unique historic site on Saturday, June 16, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The midden is reached via an easy looping trail about 1/3 mile in length.
This event is FREE and open to all. Space is limited, so you are encouraged to register by the 14th by calling DRA at 207-563-1393.
This event is part of the Damariscotta Oyster Celebration taking place from Thursday, June 14 through Saturday, June 16.
