As a warm-up event for the Damariscotta Oyster Celebration in June, Coastal Rivers is partnering with local oyster growers to organize a river clean-up on Friday, May 17. We invite one and all to join the effort! Meet at the Damariscotta Town Landing at 9:00 AM to coordinate clean-up locations and pick up trash bags. There will be a number of boats dispersing to various points on the river. High waterproof boots and work gloves are recommended. Those who live on the Damariscotta River are encouraged to participate by patrolling their own shoreline.

Coastal Rivers Paddlers – May 18

The Coastal Rivers Paddlers, formerly known as the PWA Paddlers, will kick off the 2019 paddling season with an excursion to Cabbage Island & Lewis Cove, launching from East Boothbay. Paddlers should meet at the launch site at 8:30 for a 9:00 AM departure time. Directions to the launch site: Take Route 1 south and make a left onto Route 27 south in Edgecomb. Follow Route 27 about 11 miles to Route 96 (at the traffic light by Hannafords) in Boothbay Harbor. Turn left and follow Rt. 96 for approx. 2½ miles, bearing right at the grocery market onto Murray…

A regular program for homeschool families and groups. These classes are held 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon the fourth Monday of each month (except May). A hike and nature journaling are always included. May Mini-camp - Horseshoe Crab Safari May 24, 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM (AOS 93 schools closed). For children ages 6-11. Make discoveries in the salt marsh, play games, and search for horseshoe crabs. Explore forests and fields, create art projects, keep a nature journal, and more. Participants will need to bring snacks, lunch, and warm outdoor gear. Pre-registration is due one week before the session starts, although earlier registration is recommended as these sessions tend to fill up quickly. Fee: $45, or $40 for members at the Mussel level or above. An out-and-back 5K on gently rolling paved roads. The course runs along Bayview Road and onto Belvedere Road, with a turn-around at Oyster Creek. There will be a water station at the turn-around. Awards: Cash prizes for overall first place M/F finishers, as well as age categories 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+ Swag: Original design alewives t-shirt, alewives reusable shopping bag, and coupons for the fish ladder festival. Paddlers should meet at the launch site at 8:30 for a 9:00 AM departure time. Directions to the launch site: Take Route 130 south for approximately 11 miles, and turn right onto Huddle Road. Jr. Naturalist After-school Program - May 2019 Mondays & Wednesdays, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., month-long sessions for ages 6-11 Inquiry-based, hands-on learning in a safe outdoor environment. DRA Great Salt Bay Farm is on bus routes from local schools and close to Route 1. May - Animals on the Move: Search for elusive elvers (baby eels), watch warblers, and observe horseshoe crabs spawning. Fee: $55/$50 members at Mussel level or above (scholarships available). Frogs and Pollywogs - RESCHEDULED FOR MAY 30 For preschoolers (ages 2-5) and their parents/guardians. A hike is always included. May 30 (NOTE NEW DATE) - Pond Critters: Well, we waited and waited for some horseshoe crabs to arrive, but they don't seem to appreciate the colder-than-usual weather we've been having. LakeSmart is an educational program intended to protect the water quality of lakes and ponds by offering free evaluations and information to homeowners about best practices for managing their waterfront homes and yards to prevent harmful runoff. The program depends on trained volunteers who are invited by homeowners to evaluate a property and then make recommendations and provide information if needed.
