Join naturalist Sarah Gladu in the field to search for and identify caterpillars, butterflies, and moths. We will tag monarchs and report our findings to the Maine Butterfly Survey. All ages are welcome! Butterfly nets will be provided. Come prepared to be outside, but do not wear pyrethrin insecticide please. Rain date is September 29. Flowers and Fruit: We'll look for flowers and pollinators, and press apples to make apple cider.

For preschoolers (ages 2-5) and their parents/guardians. A little bit of learning and exploring, and a hike!

These classes are held 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. the fourth Thursday of each month (except November and December). Fee: $3.00 per child, or prepay for 5 classes and get a 6th class free. Sign up online.

Learn about pollinators and plants, make apple cider with a press, tour a working farm, forage for wild edibles, play nature-inspired games, and much more at this one-day camp for kids ages 6 to 11.

Kids will need to bring snacks, lunch, and warm outdoor gear. Pre-registration is due one week before the session starts, although earlier registration is recommended as these sessions tend to fill up quickly. Fee: $50, or $45 for members at the Mussel level or above. Register online.

Fall weather can be ideal for walking in the woods, and it’s fascinating to observe local plants and animals during this time of transition as they get ready for cold weather! Join Education Director Sarah Gladu on gentle hikes with frequent stops for natural history learning. FREE.

Boots are recommended. We love dogs, but we ask that you leave them at home for these guided hikes. Register online.

Partner Event: Photo-based storytelling workshop

An introduction to photo-based storytelling and the Maine Coast Photovoice Project Learn about photo-based storytelling and a new project documenting development and change along the Damariscotta River estuary through photographs. This partner event is presented by Kevin Duffy, a teacher of Visual Communication at the University of Maine. The first in a series, the workshop will introduce the Maine Coast Photovoice Project, a collaborative, community-based research effort Kevin started last year to document the opportunities and challenges facing communities along coastal estuaries in Maine. Wabanaki Ways: Build wigwams, taste wild edibles, and make cedar twine.

A regular program for homeschool families and groups. We start each class with an introduction to the topic, followed by a hike and nature journaling.

Novem-brrrr! – Heading South: Discover how birds prepare for winter, dissect owl pellets, and play nature games.

For kids ages 6 to 11. Active, hands-on learning in a safe outdoor environment. Coastal Rivers Nature Center is on bus routes from Great Salt Bay and Nobleboro Central schools and close to Route 1.

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., for month-long sessions. Fee: $55, or $50 for members at the Mussel level and above.
