Preserve Guidelines

We hope you enjoy your visit!

Coastal Rivers volunteers and staff manage 30 preserves that are open to the public at no cost, all year round, for low-impact recreation, nature exploration, and quiet solitude.

We thank you for observing the following guidelines to help us protect these special places and ensure everyone feels welcomed and safe during their visit. Please see individual trail pages for more specific details.

Please email us at trails@coastalrivers.org with any questions or concerns, or to report trail issues.

Plan ahead and prepare

Know the weather, route, and terrain, and dress appropriately.

Travel on durable surfaces

Walk only on trails, trail structures, rocks, and beaches.

Leave what you find

Leave flowers, plants, and artifacts where you find them. Non-commercial foraging for cultural use is allowed by permission. Please email trails@coastalrivers.org.

No metal detectors

Kindle no fires

Respect wildlife

Observe from a distance and keep your dog(s) under control.

No drones

Exceptions may be made for research or educational use, with prior written permission. Please email trails@coastalrivers.org.

Carry in, carry out

Carry out all waste. Bonus points (and our gratitude) if you carry out any waste you find!

Be considerate of other visitors

Please enjoy preserves quietly.

Day use only

Dogs

We love dogs, but for the comfort and safety of other visitors as well as wildlife we ask that you keep them on leash or under voice control at all times, with two exceptions: If your dog is under reliable voice control, Dodge Point (owned by the State of Maine) permits dogs to be off-leash. Dogs are also permitted to be off-leash on the privately owned Oyster Creek Trail, adjacent to Salt Bay Farm.

Please carry out all pet waste and bring it home to dispose of it.

Because of its importance to wildlife, dogs are not permitted at Keyes Woods Preserve.

Hunting

Coastal Rivers is committed to providing access to our lands for hunting, where appropriate. We do ask hunters to notify Coastal Rivers before hunting on land trust property. Call 207-563-1393 or email trails@coastalrivers.org.

Temporary tree stands and game cameras are allowed by permission; contact trails@coastalrivers.org. Stands must be away from trails and marked with the hunter’s name, address, and phone number. No metal fasteners may be used in trees, and cutting trees or brush is not permitted.

Hunters must follow all laws and rules set by Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Target shooting as well as predator hunting, including bear, fox, bobcat and coyote, is prohibited on all Coastal Rivers properties.

>> See the list of all properties where hunting is permitted.

Trapping

Trapping is allowed on some of Coastal Rivers’ properties by prior written permission only. All properties funded by the Land for Maine’s Future program are required to allow access for trapping. Other properties will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Email trails@coastalrivers.org.
