This summer, Coastal Rivers was grateful to host a hard-working, six-member crew from the Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) for three weeks from late June through mid-July. The MCC is dedicated to environmental stewardship and launching the careers of the next generation of environmental leaders. This paid crew brought incredible energy, skill, and expertise to two of our preserves in Bremen.

Thanks to their efforts, we’ve made significant progress on two major trail projects:

Trail re-route at Muscongus Pond Preserve

At Muscongus Pond Preserve, the crew successfully rerouted a section of the existing trail. This update not only makes the hike more enjoyable and scenic but ensures the trail is more sustainable and resilient against erosion and heavy use for years to come.

Closer to the finish line at Sarah Weston Kent Preserve

The crew spent the bulk of their time one the new trail at the Sarah Weston Kent Preserve, where they constructed approximately one mile of trail. This addition extends the current trail network much closer to McCurdy Pond, marking a major milestone toward completing the preserve’s future trail system.

Coastal Rivers acquired this spectacular, 230-acre property in 2023 through a deeply discounted sale by the family of the late owner. Named in memory of Sarah Weston Kent, the preserve is being thoughtfully developed to open up public access to one of Bremen’s largest conserved landscapes while strictly protecting its forests, wetlands, streams, and exceptional ecological resources.

Coastal Rivers plans to open the first section of the Sarah Weston Kent Preserve trail this fall, with the full trail network anticipated to open in summer 2027. The trail will share a parking area and trailhead with the neighboring Pemaquid Pond Preserve.

Volunteer trail workday

The project wasn’t just about the crew; it was about community. During their stay, the MCC crew partnered with Coastal Rivers staff to lead a community volunteer trail workday.

Nearly 25 enthusiastic volunteers, staff, and crew members rolled up their sleeves togetherto clear trail corridors, improve trail tread, and push the entire project closer to completion.

This work was made possible in part through support from Two For The Trails, Athletic Brewing Company’s generous grant program. Their funding helped bring the MCC crew here to build and improve the two trails.

The Maine Conservation Corps is devoted to conservation and environmental stewardship across the state, with an emphasis on the professional and personal growth of its members. As part of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, MCC strives to launch the conservation careers of the next generation of environmental leaders. Paid members have the opportunity to expand their conservation credentials by designing and completing projects, developing critical job skills, providing educational opportunities to communities, and engaging local volunteers in activities.
