The Hilton O’Connor trail has a number of bog bridges over wet areas and stream crossings, one of which includes a few stairs at either end. There are occasional rocks and roots along the trail and some benches here and there for resting. Moderate elevation changes.
An easy to moderate trail meanders through the 47-acre Bremen Town Forest, peaceful and quiet. There’s a picnic area with a picnic table or two near the trailhead.
The trail is dedicated in memory of Diane Hilton O’Connor, who was a long-time member of the Bremen Conservation Commission.
Good opportunities for birdwatching, especially in the salt marsh and in the alder thickets along the western portion of the blue loop. There are some impressive red oaks along the trail, delightful fern alleys, bubbling brooks, and a winding salt marsh along the eastern edge of the forest. In late summer, look for monarch caterpillars in the meadow.
From Business Rt. 1 in Damariscotta, turn onto Biscay Road at the traffic light (by McDonalds). Follow Biscay Road until the intersection with Route 32 and turn left. The Bremen Town House and Fire Department will be on the right after a little over 2 miles. Parking is at the Town House. The trailhead can be found in the picnic area in the woods just behind the Town House.
