The trail surface is dirt/forest floor. and fairly even underfoot. The path gradually descends to the shore, where there are a couple benches, and climbs just as gradually back to the parking area.
This 10-acre preserve, donated by J. Huston Dodge, Sr. , includes over 500 feet of frontage along the Damariscotta River. A partial loop trail descends gently through a field populated by dogbane and blueberry, then winds down to the shore through mature oak and pine forest. An impressive glacial erratic marks a junction in the trail. Two benches near the shore offer a quiet and peaceful spot to enjoy the view. Please help us protect this site from erosion by avoiding the tombolo and shoreline area.
Huston Landing features an interesting geologic formation called a tombolo – a sandy isthmus that attaches an island to the mainland. The shoreline here is a spawning site for horseshoe crabs in the spring, and is a good spot for birdwatching.
The parking area for Huston Landing is located on the Bristol Road (Rt. 129) in Damariscotta, 1.6 miles from Business Route 1, on the right as you head south. A small pull off allows parking for 1-2 vehicles.
