Everyone venturing into the woods should learn to navigate confidently with a map and compass. In this workshop, participants will learn how to read a USCGS topographical map, how to use a handheld compass, how to obtain a bearing from the map and convert it to magnetic from true, and what declination is. Practice finding your way with a map and compass and discuss skills that will help you “stay found” (as opposed to getting lost). Meet your bird hike leader at DRA’s Great Salt Bay Farm and either walk at this site or car-pool to other near-by sites for the best viewing. There are two bird hikes scheduled: Saturday, May 5 and Saturday, May 19 All ages and levels welcome. Bird books and binoculars are available to borrow. Learn to make traditional gourd baskets with Abenaki educator Judy Dow. Techniques can include burning a design onto your gourd, painting it, or dyeing it with black walnut. You might want to weave other materials into your rim, such as reed (colored or plain), corn husks, or pine needles. You may choose to make a night light instead of a basket. Coastal Rivers is seeking volunteer Midden Minders to make regular visits to one or more of Coastal Rivers’ many middens to take measurements and record changes through observations and photographs. Volunteers will also document storm impacts, which will help researchers and resource managers understand threats to the middens and plan for data rescue and conservation. Volunteers will need to commit to visiting their midden or middens at least twice a month during the warmer months.
